Election Commission Denied Awami League 10 December Rally in Dhaka
The Election Commission of Bangladesh has denied permission for the ruling Awami League to hold a rally in Dhaka on 10 December 2023.
The rally, planned by the Awami League’s Dhaka city south unit, was scheduled to take place at the South Gate of the capital’s Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.
Md Riaz Uddin, the office secretary of the Dhaka city south unit, confirmed that the Election Commission did not grant them permission for the rally.
The purpose of the rally was to demand a speedy trial of what the Awami League describes as BNP-Jamaat’s ‘terr*rist gangs.’
The rally was also intended to honor the family members of those who were killed and injured in arson-petrol bomb attacks.
The event was expected to have Road Transport and Bridges Minister and Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader as the chief guest.
With the denial of permission for the rally, the Awami League’s Dhaka city south unit plans to hold a discussion at the Dhaka district unit office in Tejgaon on the same day, 10 December.
This development comes amidst the political atmosphere in Bangladesh, where rallies and public gatherings are common ways for political parties to express their views and mobilize support.
The denial of permission for this rally indicates the complexities and challenges political parties face in organizing public events.
